Racks and stacking structures

Circumstances described by Item 3 of the Table in Section 7 of the Regulation for Industrial Establishments require a PSR if:

“Material, articles or things are placed or stored on a structure that is a rack or stacking structure.”

Racks and stacking structures are often designed for mechanical lifting devices, typically lift trucks, to place loads onto the structure. These structures can be constructed of steel, wood, aluminum or concrete members. Unless the structure has been designed and tested for use in accordance with the applicable standards, a PSR is required to ensure safe operation.

If the rack or stacking structure is used for the storage of flammable materials, it may trigger the need for an Item 1 PSR. In the case of automated storage retrieval systems, stacking structures and lifting devices are often used in conjunction which require a PSR for Item 3 and Item 7.
